new craft adventure

so i finally gave in and got myself a sewing machine. i have no idea how to sew, but i've been really dying to try after seeing all of the fantastic projects that i've been seeing around the blog world! i'm also sick of "no sew" projects! they are cute and easy, don't get me wrong, but i'm itching for the real thing! i'll be posting the kids' costumes shortly--little red riding hood and the big bad wolf. found the directions for the no sew version over @ anyhoo--i went on over to to do some browsing. seriously, i had no idea what to get! it came down to a brother and a singer. just for shits and giggles, i then went to and found the same brother that walmart had, only it was refurbished--and about $20 cheaper, oh, and only $1 shipping! SOLD! it should be here today, i'm so excited!! however, i have nothing to go with this sewing machine! i really don't know what i need to start!! tee hee. any tips, webs sites, favorite tools--or anything that anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated!!

oh, and don't forget to visit vicki @

october is alllmost over! tricks and treats for our little sweets will be ending SOON!!

  1. The last time I sewed was in junior high home ec class. I didn't do so well with that. Do they still have home ec in school anymore?

  2. I have a Brother machine from Wal-Mart and I love it! I'm completely addicted to sewing now!

You're going to get most of the tools you need i.e. presser foots and such (bobbins, seam ripper, etc.) with the machine and they have a really detailed manual that describes how to do different stiches and things. I found that really useful and still do. That's all you'll need to get started besides scissors, thread and a project to do. All the other things will come later once you get addicted too!

YouTube has some great tutorials from some excellent seamstresses...just type in sewing or what you want to learn how to do like, 'putting in a zipper'. That's helped me a lot because I need to see it, not just read it to learn.

Hope that helped a little, I'm far from an expert, but I do love to sew! :)

  3. I am so jealous! I don't sew either, but I would like to learn. I think you need thread and a bobbin. That is the extent of my knowledge. Good luck with your new adventures! Can't wait to see what you make.

  4. HAVE FUN! I would love to give you tips, but I'm just learning myself....and I started with all the HARD stuff (that's what my mom told me anyway) OOPS!

  5. I've been wanting a sewing machine for a really long time! I have no idea what to do, but I am bound and determined to buy one and learn. Have fun!! And I can't wait to see some of your projects.

There's a really cute blog that sells great and easy patterns. Email me if you want the link!

  6. Ooooh Tina, I envy you! I have a serious urge to learn how to sew but also a serious fear of it!

  7. Oh I can't wait how this goes for you! I put a Brother sewing machine on my Christmas list! I just want to be able to do things like sew hems in curtains or fix my husbands always hole-y work pants, but I suppose in the future it could become a hobby. Good luck!

  8. It's going to be such a fun new adventure for you! This time next year, you'll be a pro.
